For those of you that don’t know there are two Famous Coney Islands in Detroit.
Layfette Coney Island and American Coney Island. They are located right next to each other on Layfette Blvd in Downtown Detroit. They have been in a Rivalry for many years. We had to check this out and Decided for ourselves, which one is truly the better Coney!!!
Our First stop was Layfette it was a small diner, which could hold no more than 30 people. The atmosphere was very hole in the wall sit down, eat your food and get out. Which I absolutely love!!!! Dirty walls, dirty cooks and people screaming your order across the restaurant in Diner Lingo we each had a coney dog and half of it ended up on our plates like it should. We paid our bill a whopping $12 and we were headed next door.
American Coney Island was more well Americanized it looked like your Typical Coney Island Restaurant very bright colors, random things no the wall and very clean. Not as homey as the last place but still we must try and compare the two coney dogs to make out decision. We sat down and asked for 6 more coneys’ dogs and since we were starving this time we asked for fries as well. They dogs arrived and we dug in.
Time for the over all opinion ……wait for it………...wait for it… I say it’s a tie; Layfette gets major points for atmosphere and customer service experience. While Americans hot dogs were better, on the Chili taste front I would say they were both excellent. American was much bigger and cleaner but it felt like a place I could go to anywhere in Detroit. I would say that any time I was going to either I would just go to both! You can check out episodes of Food Wars and Man Vs. Food where both of these Restaurants were featured on or even better take a trip to the D and Judge for yourself!
